Are RV Steps Worth It?

RV steps are an essential component of RVs, serving as the vital bridge between the ground and the RV’s entry door. There are several reasons why you should equip RV steps for your camper:

Easy RV entry and exit

They facilitate the safe and convenient process of entering and exiting the vehicle, which is particularly crucial for RVs given their elevated position.

RV steps provide a more comfortable and pleasant entry experience, which is particularly important for those who live in their RV full-time or frequently embark on long road trips.

These steps are also essential for everyday tasks such as loading and unloading gear, and simply enjoying the great outdoors at your campsite.

Safety first

RV steps are designed with safety as a top priority. They often feature stable platforms with non-slip surfaces, handrails for additional support, and sometimes even integrated lighting for enhanced visibility during nighttime or low-light conditions.

These safety measures make it possible for users to navigate the steps with confidence and peace of mind, regardless of the weather or lighting conditions.

Legal must-have

In addition to their practical and safety benefits, RV steps are also a legal requirement in many regions. Various regulations and safety standards mandate that RVs have specific features, including safe and reliable entry steps.

Compliance with these standards is essential for RV owners to legally use their vehicles, making the presence of suitable RV steps a non-negotiable factor.

Elevated adventures

RV steps are more than just a practical necessity; they represent the gateway to elevated adventures and cherished memories.

As you ascend the steps, let the excitement of your journey unfold, knowing that you have a safe, sturdy, and stylish companion to guide you along the way.

Aesthetic appeal

RV steps aren’t just about function; they can also enhance the overall aesthetics and comfort of your RV. With a wide variety of designs and styles available, RV owners can select steps that complement the overall look and feel of their vehicle.

RV steps are a must-have accessory for any RV owner. Whether you’re a full-time RVer or just an occasional camper, RV steps are a worthwhile investment.

Types of RV Steps

RV steps come in all shapes and sizes, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. Whether you’re looking for a simple and lightweight solution or a sturdy set of steps that can handle uneven terrain, there’s an RV step out there that’s perfect for you.

Here’s a rundown of the main types of RV steps:

Platform RV steps

Platform steps are the simplest and most affordable type of RV step. They’re essentially just small stools that you place in front of the RV door.

Platform steps are lightweight and easy to store, but they’re not as stable as other types of steps. They’re also not ideal for RVs with high entry points.

Solid RV steps

Solid RV steps are a popular pick for towable RVs because they’re reliable, easy to set up, and can handle uneven ground.

These steps fold up neatly into the doorway when you’re towing your RV, and they extend quickly and easily when you reach your campsite. The best solid step models have adjustable legs to keep you stable even on the bumpiest terrain

Portable RV steps

Full-time RVers and those who stay in one spot for an extended period often prefer portable RV steps, also known as porch steps.

These steps offer more stability than foldable steps, and they typically have a larger handrail, which makes them easier to enter and exit the RV, especially for people with limited mobility.

Unlike foldable steps, portable steps are more permanent and not designed to be folded up and stored away while traveling.

Foldable RV steps

Foldable RV steps are designed to stow away under the RV’s door while traveling. They can be either manual or electric.

  • Electric foldable steps are powered by a motor. They automatically extend and retract at the push of a button. When turned on, the steps automatically extend and retract when the RV door is opened and closed. You might find electric steps popular on Class A and Class C motorhomes. While convenient, they may require regular maintenance to keep the motor and gear assembly in good condition.
  • Manual foldable steps, on the other hand, are operated by hand and are simpler in design and maintenance. Manual RV steps are more common in older motorhomes and towable RVs. Manual steps require a bit more effort to use, but they’re still relatively easy to extend and retract. And since they don’t have any electrical components, they’re less likely to break down, making them a hassle-free option for many RV owners.

6 Best RV Steps: In-depth Reviews

1. Lippert Components – 791574 Solid Step Quad Step for RV and Travel Trailer Entry Doorway

lippert solid step 26

Why we love it:

The steps that came with our RV just weren’t cutting it anymore. We needed something safer and more stable for entering and exiting our camper. That’s why we decided to upgrade to the Lippert Components product and it’s one of the best RV steps without any doubt.

These steps have made a huge difference in our camping experiences. With their extra-wide top step and no-bounce steel treads, we feel much more secure whether getting in or out of our RV.

The adjustable legs grip uneven terrain perfectly, so there’s no worrying about the steps slipping out from under you. And the recessed feet help prevent tripping, which we really appreciate after a long day of hiking and adventure.

Setting up the Solid Step was easy. Just screw it into place through the pre-drilled holes and you’re good to go. Take-down is equally effortless, as the folding design means we can neatly stash it away in seconds flat. Also, these amazing RV pull out steps fold down tight so they don’t steal valuable interior space when traveling.

The kids especially love how wide and stable the camper steps feel underfoot. While the price tag may seem steep, we can confidently say these steps are worth every penny for the safety and convenience they provide. Our only minor critique is that the paint can chip easily in rough conditions.

  • Wide, sturdy steps for easy access in/out of RV
  • Folds compactly for storage while traveling
  • Adjustable legs for secure footing on uneven surfaces
  • Easy one-person setup and takedown
  • Pre-drilled holes for simple installation

  • Higher initial cost than basic steps
  • Paint can chip with outdoor use
  • May require door adjustment for clearance

2. MORryde – STP-206 Step Above 2nd Generation RV Entry Step

morryde - stp-206 step above 2nd generation rv entry step

Why we love it:

Want safer and more versatile steps for RV campers than the stock one? MORryde brings one of the best RV steps. These sturdy steps have quickly become our new favorite camping accessory.

The wider construction and extendable legs make a huge difference in stability. At nearly 50 pounds, these steps feel rock solid underfoot whether loading the RV or helping grandma inside.

We especially appreciate the gradual slope between each tread. It feels much more natural for stepping than other RV steps we’ve used. And the handy quick-release latches make adjusting the legs over uneven surfaces easier.

Setting up the Step Above took almost no time at all, thanks to the simple bolt-on installation. Removal is just as fast, so we can easily stow the steps away when breaking down camp.

If you prefer RV steps with handrail for extra safety and balance, you can purchase compatible handrail from MORryde. It attaches in seconds and gives peace of mind.

The only issue we encountered was a bit of interference from an under-door light fixture. But with a little creative filing, we were able to modify the threshold just enough for everything to fit perfectly. It was worth the small fix to enjoy the sturdiness and features of these fantastic steps.

  • Stable platform with extendable legs
  • Gradual step slope for natural foot placement
  • Quick-release latches for easy height adjustment
  • Optional handrail adds safety

  • May interfere with under-door fixtures
  • Modifying door threshold sometimes needed
  • High price

3. Camco Adjustable Height RV Step Stool

camco adjustable height rv step stool 43676

Why we love it:

We were excited to try the Camco Adjustable Height RV Step Stool after our disappointment with various step stools. This aluminum RV steps stool caught our eye because of its height adjustable feature.

The step stool feels  sturdy and highly stable. The non-slip rubber feet and grip tape on the platform provide secure footing even on uneven surfaces. At just under 20 inches wide, it comfortably spans our RV doorway so we don’t have to worry about missing a step. The platform is also roomy enough for toolbox storage when not in use.

One of our favorite features is the adjustable height function. We appreciate being able to fine tune the step height from 7 1/2 to 9 inches high based on terrain. This comes in handy when leveling up or down from grass to concrete. The lightweight aluminum construction makes it easy to store away or tote around campsites.

However, adjusting between height settings isn’t as smooth as we’d like. The push buttons can get stuck on the leg holes at times. But with a little persuasion, they do still allow for adjustment. We also think reflective tape would make the step safer at night.

We find the Camco step stool to be one of the best RV steps we’ve owned. You can rely on it if you prefer aluminum steps for RV

  • Adjusts between 7 1/2″ – 9″ heights for uneven surfaces
  • Wide 19″ platform spans most RV doorways
  • Lightweight aluminum construction
  • Non-slip grip surface provides security

  • Height adjustment buttons can get stuck
  • No reflective markings for low light visibility

4. Stromberg Carlson EHS-102-R Second Step for Fifth Wheel

stromberg carlson ehs-102-r second step for fifth wheel

Why we love it:

We’ve found the best RV steps for making entry and exit a breezeβ€”the Stromberg Carlson EHS-102-R. These steps shine with features we rely on.

The wide platform and non-skid surface provide secure footing. At just the right 7-inch rise, they’re easy to navigate because of the sturdy handrail. We appreciate how the railing detaches easily for storage or swapping sides to best suit our RV door setup.

Set up is a snap, whether tucked inside our motorhome steps or propped beside the camper door. Folks of all ages and abilities feel steadied using these steps. They’ve also proven dog-friendly, helping even our large pups enter and exit without issue.

At around 50 pounds, they’re weighty enough to feel firmly planted but still feasible to wrangle solo. The thick paint coat keeps them protected from the elements. We’ve found them durable through years of heavy use. However, the weight limit is 300 lbs, so keep that in mind.

The price is on the higher side. But if you appreciate convenience and safety on the go, these are the best steps for a motorhome. Ours have paid themselves many times over.

  • Wide, non-slip platforms for secure footing
  • Adjustable handrail for stability
  • Multiple height positions for various vehicles
  • Heavy-duty construction built to last

  • Somewhat heavy at around 50 lbs
  • Higher up-front cost compared to other options

5. Stromberg Carlson Manual RV Step

stromberg carlson manual rv step

Why we love it:

The Stromberg Carlson is one of the best RV steps on a budget. You can use them as replacement steps for RV rigs when the stock one is low-quality.

We purchased these folding steps for RV after the old single step started showing its age. Being able to fold the entire staircase unit into a compact package saves storage space.

The triple-step folding stairs for RV give a nice safe rise and run for entering and exiting the RV. At just under 8 inches, the tread depth feels secure without taking up excess space.

The weight rating is 300 pounds, so this product is not suitable for big people. Assembly was simple, though fitting it to our existing mount points required some modification. Now securely in place, the steps work like a dream.

Folding the stairs for storage is intuitive with the sliding locking mechanism. A gentle pull extends the framed staircase smoothly without banging fingers. The folding camper steps retract just as easily into the compact holder at the top.

For RVers on a budget looking to replace worn steps, these Stromberg Carlson stairs really can’t be beat. That said, fitment may require adjustments depending on your specific mounting points. Our only minor gripe is that the steps can bind if not pulled squarely at first.

  • Compact folding staircase takes up little storage space
  • Sturdy construction supports up to 300 pounds
  • Intuitive sliding/locking mechanism for easy use
  • Affordably priced option

  • May require modifications to fit existing mount points
  • Could bind if not pulled out evenly at first

6. Buyers Products 3013658 Poly Step

buyers products 3013658 poly step

Why we love it:

As RV owners, we know the importance of having an RV door step that is sturdy, practical for everyday use, and can weather all conditions. After much research, we decided to give the Buyers Products Poly Step a try, and we’re impressed.

As portable RV steps, this product hits the mark on functionality. At just 16 pounds, it’s lightweight enough to easily move in and out of place as needed. Yet the sturdy polyethylene construction supports up to 350 pounds without issue.

It offers the perfect height for quick and comfortable entry into our travel trailer. Simply unfold and you’re ready to roll.

While the step provides a stable footing on level surfaces, we’ve found it can feel a tad unstable on uneven terrain without staking. A few more anchoring holes would remedy this minor issue.

The first step also noticeably sinks in the middle under heavy use. However, for the affordable price, it’s tough to complain. It’s one of the best RV steps if you prefer portability.

  • Lightweight and portable
  • Supports up to 350 lbs
  • Provides correct height for easy entry/exit
  • Durable polyethylene won’t rust or break

  • First step sinks slightly under weight
  • Needs anchoring on uneven surfaces
